Fast facts

  • Gateway to the Illawarra, with an impressive Hindu temple
  • Bordered to the north by the Royal National Park
  • 54 km south-west of Sydney, population 5,000

Why go there

Helensburgh is close to the natural splendours of the Royal National Park. Right on its doorstep are some lovely walking trails leading through rainforest and past waterfalls.

Since 1978, Helensburgh has been the home of the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple, a glistening white South Indian-style Hindu temple. Set on top of a hilly area, the temple has become the focal point for Sydney’s Hindu community, which holds regular festivals and celebrations there.

History

Originally a tent town for workers on the Illawarra Line, Helensburgh became a permanent settlement when coal was exposed by railway workers cutting through sandstone for the railway line in 1884.

  • See Sri Venkateswara Temple, a must for any visitor. Greens Northern Coaches can get you there from Helensburg Station.
  • Picnic at Kelly's Falls, a cool summer refuge.

  • See koalas, kangaroos, emus and reptiles at Symbio Wildlife Gardens, set in 16 acres of bushland near Helensburgh.

Events

  • Helensburgh Country Fair, in October, features music, market stalls, carnival fun and animal displays.

Don’t miss

  • The Coastal Track, a majestic 26-km, two-day hike that spans the national park.
  • The Dharawal State Recreation Area, a habitat for many plants and threatened species, at its spectacular best in spring.
  • Sri Venkateswara Temple at festival time in September.
  • The dazzling drive down the escarpment to the coast.
