Tours for kids

There are some exciting tours that will inspire bright young minds while they learn about Sydney’s colourful history, its Aboriginal heritage and local sporting heroes. They’ll also be able to enjoy big city views, join behind-the –scenes at Sydney Airport and the Sydney Opera House.

Things to do

  • Learn about Sydney’s indigenous Aboriginal culture at the time of European settlement with an Aboriginal-guided tour of Cadi Jam Ora. This fascinating display in the Royal Botanic Gardens features food and medicinal plants used by local Aboriginal people.
  • See the guns that once defended Sydney on a guided tour of Manly’s North Fort and the Royal Australian Artillery Museum. Explore over 350 metres of underground tunnels, see uniforms, regimental badges and ammunition.
  • Take an evening ghost tour at Manly’s Quarantine Station where immigrants who arrived on vessels with contagious diseases were once isolated. Lots of spooky stories, told by lantern light.
  • Get the gruesome inside story on a piece of Sydney’s history with a tour of Fort Denison, right in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Tours of the tiny, fortified harbour island are offered by National Parks and Wildlife Service.
  • Take a backstage tour of Sydney Airport with an Airside Tarmac Tour, a 90-minute bus tour of runways, hangars and terminals with an in-depth commentary.
  • Explore the mangroves and secluded waterways of the Royal National Park with Cronulla Cruises.
  • Admire the view from outside Sydney Tower on a Skywalk tour. Suited skywalkers tread on a glass-floored walkway with heart-stopping views from 250 metres above the city. For children over 10.
  • Get a sporting star’s view of the Sydney Cricket Ground with the SCG Tour Experience or take an interactive tour that follows in the footsteps of Olympic Champions at Sydney Olympic Park.
  • See inside the sails of the world famous Sydney Opera House. Guided one-hour tours depart at frequent intervals. For a behind-the-scenes tour take the Backstage Tour.
  • Head for the summit of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge on a BridgeClimb – if you’re over 10 and can find an adult who dares to accompany you.
