Sydney’s animal kingdoms

Sydney is one of the best places in the world to see some extraordinary wildlife – from the creatures that hop, burrow and crawl across the country to the inhabitants of the underwater world and the furry giants of the animal kingdom from around the world.  


Most are in zoos and aquariums but you’ll also be able to spot whales during the annual winter migration in June, colourful fish, possums and native birds.

Things to do

  • Come nose to nose with some of Australia’s animal icons at Sydney Wildlife World - wallabies, snakes, birds and a huge butterfly habitat with thousands of delicate winged beauties.
  • Admire the furry animals at Featherdale Wildlife Park, a rollcall of Australia's extraordinary and often elusive fauna. See birds, marsupials, reptiles, kangaroos and koalas in a bushland setting.
  • See some of the spectaculars of the animal kingdom at Taronga Zoo including giraffes, lions, snow leopard, kangaroos, koalas, emus and platypus - in surroundings that re-create the animals’ natural habitats.
    The Great Southern Ocean exhibit has Australian Sea Lions and fur seals, New Zealand Fur Seals, Californian Sea Lions, Leopard Seals, penguins and pelicans.
  • Get a fish-eye view of the underwater world at the Sydney Aquarium, the best place to see Australia’s extraordinary aquatic life at close quarters without getting wet. As well as crocodiles and tanks full of multicoloured tropical fish, the aquarium has see-through tunnels that take you on a spectacular undersea journey through various habitats teeming with sea creatures.
  • Take a trip into the aquatic world at Oceanworld Manly, a historic aquarium with exotic marine life, and a 110 metre underwater tunnel that takes you into the realm of giant stingrays, turtles and sharks.
