Why go there

Muru Mittigar first opened in 1998 as an initiative of the Aboriginal Community of Western Sydney. The aim was to acknowledge the Darug people as the traditional custodians of the local area and to create an environment that maintained Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Local Aboriginal people work here and learn about their heritage. The centre is also open to non-Aboriginal people who want to know more about local Aboriginal culture.

The Cultural Museum showcases the art, stories, and artefacts of the Darug people, as well as the diversity of Aboriginal cultures throughout Australia.

Aboriginal dance performances take place in an outdoor amphitheatre; you can also learn about Aboriginal art and painting materials.

Tour guides play various tunes and animal sounds on the Yidaki – or didgeridoo. They also tell the story about the creation of this instrument, along with the reasons why only men are allowed to play it.

Learn about boomerang throwing, and why the boomerang played an important part of traditional life.
