Tamworth’s Jackaroo and Jillaroo School

Fast facts

  • Horse riding and bush skills school makes country folk out of city slickers
  • 177 km north of Sydney, 50 km east of Tamworth

Why go there

Brush up on your whip cracking skills and cattle mustering at a five-day course in bush skills in country New South Wales.

Tim Skerrett has been running the famous Jackaroo and Jillaroo School on his huge cattle and sheep station near Tamworth since 1997. Students come here for the great country atmosphere and the chance to do some serious riding at one of Australia’s best bush schools.

You’ll stay in bunkhouse accommodation, eat with the station staff and learn about horse grooming, saddling and shoeing even before you mount a horse.

Then you ride through rough, hilly country and wade through rivers, learning about bushcraft and bush tucker along the way. Muster sheep and cattle and learn how to build fences, rope and lassoo animals, control working dogs, and even shear sheep.

You’ll learn how to work with your horse the natural way, by using communication, knowledge and psychology.

Don’t miss

  • Evenings under the stars and around the campfire eating camp-oven cooked meals
  • A ride to the swimming hole to swim with your horse
  • Playing natural horsemanship games with your mount to see how well it responds
