Cave Tours

Fast facts

  • Magical limestone rock formations make up some of the world’s most majestic caves.
  • Some of the best cave tours in New South Wales are Jenolan, Wombeyan, Abercrombie and Yarrangobilly Caves.

Why go there

Walking through the entrance of a grand cave into a mystical scenery of stalactites and stalagmites is one of the most magical experiences you can have anywhere. There are several wonderful cave systems in New South Wales, among them the world-famous Jenolan Caves, in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.

There are nine major caves open to the public at Jenolan, including Lucas Cave. This features the highest and widest chambers in the cave system, and the most photographed formation at Jenolan, the Broken Column.

Another favourite is the Temple of Baal Cave, with its nine-metre-wide ‘Angel's Wing’ – Jenolan’s largest free-hanging shawl.

Five more spectacular underground fantasy worlds make up the Wombeyan Caves, located to the south west of Sydney, via Mittagong. The geological features in all the caves are truly stunning, with the Wollondilly Cave taking top prize for its five intricate chambers.

The Abercrombie Caves, found south of Bathurst, features the largest natural arch in the southern hemisphere. King Solomons Temple includes impressive views of the towering archway roof and a walk over a suspension bridge.

Find another beautiful underground world at the Yarrangobilly Caves on the edge of the Snowy Mountains.

Don’t miss

  • An adventure caving tour at either Jenolan or Wombeyan, including plenty of crawling and squeezing through tunnels.
  • A historical tour at Womebyan - see sections of caves left undisturbed since the pre-1920s candlelight tours.
  • Fossicking for gold, garnets, zircon and sapphire on a creek just south of the Archway at Abercrombie Caves.
